MAIN CANOPY
Documented comparison of 5 manufacturers and 40+ current sport models — Performance Designs, Aerodyne, JYRO, Icarus World, Fluid Wings. Specs, official public prices, wing-loading ranges and segmentation by user profile. Only manufacturer-published data, never inferred.
Guide table of contents
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The modern sport-skydiving main canopy market is clearly segmented into five operational families: students, all-round 9-cells for progression, 7-cells utility/wingsuit, non-crossbraced "gateway" performance, and crossbraced/hyper-performance. The segmentation emerges directly from manufacturers’ product pages — Performance Designs, Aerodyne, JYRO, Icarus World and Fluid Wings — not from an editorial ranking.
Three operational conclusions recur in official sources. First: there is no "best canopy" in the absolute — there are missions and categories. Second: manufacturers publish numbers like aspect ratio, glide ratio, sink rate, turn radius and projected area very unevenly; anything unpublished stays "n/a" in this guide. Third: public official prices are not uniform — some brands have full price lists, others only stock or configurators — so they are kept in the captured currency, with an indicative EUR conversion.
Method and documental limits
Primary/official sources only: product pages, official stores, order forms, line trim charts, manuals and official launch posts. Price and availability reference date: 2026-05-07.
- Sizes in sq ft are reported as-is, without auto-converting to flat or projected area when the manufacturer does not use those terms.
- When the manufacturer publishes a wing-loading range but not a weight range, the weight range is not "inferred" as official data.
- When an official site is multi-currency or localised, the currency is kept exactly as captured on the official page.
- Official qualitative wording ("soft openings", "long recovery arc", "very flat glide") is reported as official qualification, not numerical measure.
- Indicative EUR: 1 USD ≈ 0.92 EUR on the reference date, does not replace dealer listings.
CATEGORY MAP
This segmentation is not an editorial opinion — it emerges directly from manufacturers’ product pages. Each segment has a typical wing-loading range published by its representative lines.
THE 5 MANUFACTURERS
For each manufacturer: editorial description, link to the official site, and a comparison table of models. Data follows the methodology declared above.
PERFORMANCE DESIGNS
Performance Designs splits its line into mains and specialty. The modern sport-skydiving range includes Sabre3, Silhouette, Pulse, Spectre, Storm, Stiletto, Katana, Comp Velocity, Valkyrie, plus specialty wings Lightning, CF Storm, Horizon, Navigator and Peregrine. PD is also the brand most likely to publish direct prices, and is often the reference platform around which canopy progression frameworks are built.

DECISION TREE
Walk in order: the first "yes" answer points at the relevant segment. These are only the use categories published by manufacturers — not a fitness calculator.
01Are you an AFF student / making your first jumps / looking for a rental fleet?
If Yes →PD Navigator · Aerodyne Solo · JYRO Air · Icarus EquinoxTraining canopies with error tolerance and forgiving flare. WL ~0.5–1.0.
02Is wingsuit one of your main disciplines?
If Yes →PD Horizon · PD Spectre · PD Storm · Aerodyne Pilot 7 · JYRO Kraken LB/ZP · Icarus ōmReliable openings with large suits, deployment stability, low pack volume. Horizon, Kraken and ōm are the most explicitly wingsuit-specific.
03Is CReW / CRW your main discipline?
If Yes →PD Lightning · PD CF Storm · Aerodyne Triathlon CRWDedicated CF architecture: mesh slider, tail pocket, target panels, non-cascaded lines.
04Looking for a first sport canopy or a conservative daily driver?
If Yes →PD Silhouette · PD Pulse · PD Sabre3 · Aerodyne Pilot · JYRO Helium · JYRO Safire 4 · Icarus SFire · Fluid PrimeDocile openings, broad use range, daily-driver behaviour. The real difference is between low-pack-volume priority and a more brilliant response.
05Want more dive and response but not yet ready for crossbraced?
If Yes →JYRO Crossfire 3 · Aerodyne Zulu X · PD Stiletto · PD Katana · Icarus XFire · Fluid NX2A real step-up: sight picture changes on turns and flare. Long recovery arc, strong harness response.
06Looking for your first crossbraced with structured coaching?
If Yes →JYRO JFX 2 · Fluid Gangster · Aerodyne Karma · PD Comp VelocityManufacturers position these wings explicitly as crossbraced transitions. Coaching is essentially required.
07Already a seasoned pilot on small heavily-loaded crossbraced?
If Yes →JYRO Leia · JYRO Petra · PD Valkyrie · PD Peregrine · Icarus GT-R · Icarus Rebel · Fluid AirWolf2 · Fluid HK seriesSpecialist tools: maximum sensitivity, extreme recovery arc, often comp-specific behaviour. Not the natural next step of a linear progression.
Frequently asked questions
- Is there a single "best main canopy"?
- No. Manufacturers’ pages explicitly distinguish students, all-round 9-cells, 7-cell utility/wingsuit, gateway performance, first crossbraced and hyper-performance. The right choice depends on discipline, level, exit weight and target wing loading — not a ranking.
- Which canopy for AFF student and first jumps?
- The student platforms of the main brands: PD Navigator, Aerodyne Solo, JYRO Air and Icarus Equinox. They are built for error tolerance, forgiving flare and conservative WL (~0.5–1.0). Computing real wing loading and respecting dropzone limits still remain the main reference.
- What is the most sensible "first sport canopy"?
- The all-round 9-cells and low-bulk options: PD Silhouette, PD Pulse, Aerodyne Pilot, JYRO Helium, JYRO Safire 4, Icarus SFire, Fluid Prime. Docile openings, broad use range, modest yet real progression headroom. The real split is between low-pack-volume priority (Helium, Pulse, Prime) and brighter response (Sabre3, Safire 4, SFire).
- Which main canopy for wingsuit?
- The 7-cell utility and wingsuit-specific models: PD Spectre, PD Storm, PD Horizon, Aerodyne Pilot 7, JYRO Kraken Low Bulk and ZP, Icarus ōm. Horizon, Kraken and ōm are the most explicitly wingsuit-specific; Spectre, Storm and Pilot 7 stay very versatile for everyday use.
- When does it make sense to step into crossbraced?
- All serious manufacturers treat it as a supervised step: PD Comp Velocity, Aerodyne Karma, JYRO JFX 2 and Fluid Gangster are explicitly positioned as "first crossbraced" or supervised high-performance. JYRO officially requires at least 500 jumps on square/semi-elliptical before stepping to the Crossfire 3, and 500 jumps on crossbraced at 2.0+ WL before GT-R/Rebel.
- Why are many technical figures shown as "n/a" in the guide?
- For methodological consistency. Manufacturers publish numbers like aspect ratio, glide ratio, sink rate, turn radius, projected area and recommended pilot weight in highly uneven ways. The guide reports only officially declared values: anything the manufacturer doesn’t publish stays "n/a" rather than being inferred.
- How should I read the "EUR estimate" in the tables?
- The official price is the one published on the manufacturer page on 2026-05-07. The EUR conversion is indicative only, computed at 1 USD ≈ 0.92 EUR on the same date; it does not replace the Italian dealer listing and does not include VAT, duties, shipping or customisations.
- Does this guide replace a canopy coach?
- No. It’s a documented map of the market. Picking size, wing loading and the right downsizing moment always requires canopy-specific coaching, dropzone assessment and real consolidation of jumps already done. The official pages themselves insist on this.
