If you just want to try a tandem

NO MEDICAL. NO DOCTOR BOOKINGS.

A tandem only requires a self-declaration form you'll sign on the same day at the school. You state you don't have severe cardiac conditions, active epilepsy, pregnancy, or haven't taken alcohol/drugs in the previous 8 hours.

If you're uncertain about a condition (e.g. recent surgery, a hernia, ongoing therapy), call the school BEFORE booking. Not bureaucracy — it's to find the right configuration for your jump.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN CLASS 2

If you start the AFF course or want an A-license, you need the Class 2 exam from an ENAC-authorized Aero-Medical Examiner (AME). Duration: 45–60 minutes.

Medical history

Doctor asks about cardiovascular, neurological, epilepsy, diabetes, current medications, recent surgery.

Resting BP and ECG

Two blood-pressure readings + standard electrocardiogram. Baseline cardiovascular check.

Vision and hearing test

Visual acuity (with correction ok), basic color vision, simplified audiometry.

Orthopedic check

Joint mobility, spine, lower limbs to assess safe landing capability.

Urine test

Standard stick for glucose and proteins. No fasting required.

CONDITIONS TO ALWAYS DISCLOSE

Applies both to tandem self-declaration and Class 2 exam. Not disclosing isn't clever: it's a risk to you and a criminal false statement to the State.

  • !Heart problems even if resolved (arrhythmias, stents, bypass): require specialist clearance.
  • !Epilepsy or seizures: absolute contraindication for license; case-by-case for tandem.
  • !Insulin-dependent diabetes: individual assessment, often compatible with monitoring.
  • !Recent surgery (last 6 months): surgeon clearance required.
  • !Active pregnancy: absolute contraindication for any type of jump.
  • !Heavy anticoagulant or psychiatric medication: pre-consult with the AME.

Practical tip

The school running your AFF course usually has 2–3 partner AMEs at discounted rates (€100–140 vs €150–180). ALWAYS ask for the list before booking on your own: a standard sports medical certificate is NOT valid — you need the specific Class 2 ENAC.
